Trade Guide

Fletching

The archer's trade: merchant-bought components, the cheapest skilling path in the game, and arrows that hit harder than anything you can buy.

Recipes and trivials below follow the EQL wiki's Skill Fletching page as of September 2026. EQL can tune trivials with patches, so verify against the linked references before a big combine session.

1) Fletching Basics Open trade

Fletching makes bows and arrows, and almost everything you need can be bought from a merchant. The component list is small — arrow points, shafts, fletchings, and nocks; bow staves, strings, and fittings — but they combine in a huge number of ways: over 216 arrow combinations and 63 bow combinations. Many end up with identical stats, so this guide focuses on the cheapest versions, straight from the EQL wiki's leveling charts.

Where to combine

  • Fletching Kit — every fletching combine happens here.

The governing stat

Dexterity, Intelligence, or Wisdom — whichever is higher — governs your chance to gain a skill point on a combine. Rogues, rangers, and bards naturally ride Dexterity; casters buff the highest of the three before a skilling session.

Two things that make EQL fletching different

  • Arrow merging: in EQL you can upgrade arrows by merging them. Plan on combining as many as 1,024 arrows to max out a given arrow to +10.
  • Range math: the maximum range of a shot is the bow's range plus the arrow's range — both halves matter.

The golden rule

When skilling up, work on arrows, not bows. Arrows are far cheaper per combine, so your failures cost less and you get more attempts for the same platinum. Make bows to actually use early on, then switch to arrows for the grind.

2) Getting Started: Skill 0–36 Beginner

The wiki's cheapest leveling method: put one component with a high enough trivial into the kit and fill the other three slots with the cheapest parts available. The arrow's trivial is set by the highest-trivial component of the four (point, shaft, fletch, nock), so one good piece carries the combine:

Skill rangeItemTrivialIngredientsCombine in
0–16 CLASS 1 Wood Point Arrow 16 Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Round Fletching + Large Nock Fletching Kit
16–36 CLASS 1 Wood Point Arrow 36 Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Round Fletching + Medium Nock Fletching Kit

These first arrows are barely better than vendor fodder — and that's fine. The cheapest path usually makes arrows with terrible stats. If you have spare coin and want usable arrows while you climb, upgrade in this order: Parabolic Fletching (+50 range), then Small Nocks (+50 range), then Bone Shafts (+1 damage).

3) The Leveling Path: 36–162 The climb

Keep pushing the same one-good-component trick up the ladder. The highlighted component in each row is the one raising the trivial — everything else stays cheap:

Skill rangeItemTrivialIngredients
36–46CLASS 2 Wood Point Arrow46Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Parabolic Fletching + Large Nock
46–56CLASS 1 Wood Point Arrow56Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Round Fletching + Small Nock
56–68CLASS 1 Bone Point Arrow68Field Point + Bone Shaft + Round Fletching + Large Nock
68–82CLASS 3 Wood Point Arrow82Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Shield Fletching + Large Nock
82–102CLASS 1 Wood Hooked Arrow102Hooked Point + Wooden Shaft + Round Fletching + Medium Nock
102–122CLASS 4 Wood Point Arrow122Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Wood Vane Fletching + Large Nock
122–135CLASS 1 Ceramic Point Arrow135Field Point + Ceramic Shaft + Round Fletching + Large Nock
135–162CLASS 5 Wood Point Arrow162Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Bone Vane Fletching + Large Nock

The wiki's cost estimate for this whole stretch is roughly 250 platinum. If a particular combine is failing a lot, try downgrading one component to something cheaper — higher-quality components are harder to work with, and cost and difficulty don't track each other perfectly.

4) The Leveling Path: 162–300 Endgame fletching

One more cheap step gets you to 202, then the real arrows begin:

Skill rangeItemTrivialIngredients
162–202CLASS 6 Wood Point Arrow202Field Point + Wooden Shaft + Ceramic Vane Fletching + Large Nock

200–300: Advanced Arrows (trivial 335)

Past 200 you make the four advanced arrow sets. The EQL skill cap is 300, and all four are trivial at 335 — you keep skilling on them all the way up:

  • Mithril Champion Arrows (Kelethin) — no deity requirement; usable by Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, Shadow Knight. The wiki's recommended choice: nearly as good as the blessed version and far cheaper.
  • Blessed Champion Arrows (Kelethin) — Tunare worshippers only (Warrior, Paladin, Ranger); +1 fire damage and slightly longer range than the unblessed version; needs emeralds, which are store-bought.
  • Steel Guardian Arrows (Surefall Glade) — no deity requirement; usable by Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, Shadow Knight. Slightly more complicated to make (needs blacksmithing).
  • Blessed Guardian Arrows (Surefall Glade) — Karana worshippers only (Warrior, Paladin, Ranger); +1 magic damage and longer range. Needs foraged Plains Pebbles that must be enchanted — at ~5% success when you start, you'd need thousands of pebbles to ride this to 300.

The Surefall requirements

Surefall fletching isn't just fletching. To be self-sufficient you need to worship Karana, have 203 Fletching and 188 Blacksmithing. The key subcombines:

  • Mark of Karana — quested from Qaelin Hailstorm in Surefall Glade (say "I need a mark" while standing near him, not targeting). Returned on combine.
  • Surefall Fletching Kit — blacksmithing trivial 162, made in a forge.
  • Steel Working Knife — blacksmithing trivial 42 (Karana only), returned on combine.
  • Steel Arrowheads — blacksmithing trivial 188, yields 2.
  • Steel Arrowshafts — blacksmithing trivial 42, yields 2.

The wiki's plain advice: if you just want the best arrows without the hassle, make normal Mithril Champion Arrows — follow the Blessed Champion guide and leave out the emeralds. No deity requirement, no blacksmithing, no foraging.

5) Bow Making 101 Bows

Bows are the minority of fletching — you make them to use, not to skill on — but a fletcher who understands the parts makes better ones:

  • The bow staff sets the base damage, range, and delay.
  • The string trades damage for speed: the better the string, the less damage the bow does but the shorter the delay. A hickory bow with a linen string hits harder than one with a silk string — the silk-string bow just fires faster.
  • Whittling knives, planing tools, and cams reduce delay further at the cost of damage.
  • The more parts you add, the faster the bow gets — and the less it hits per shot. In practice the ratio still improves overall.

Note: rough hickory bows go trivial long before arrows of similar component cost, so bows are a poor skilling choice — the classic advice (skill on arrows) stands.

6) The Money Fletching Economy

Fletching is one of the cheapest trades to level (~250pp to 162) and one of the few where the product is a consumable every archer burns through:

  • Making your own arrows beats buying merchant arrows — and in EQL you can merge them up to +10, which no vendor sells.
  • Sell to the archer classes: rangers, warriors, paladins, and shadow knights all use bows. Rangers in particular never stop needing arrows.
  • +10 merged arrows are the premium product — merging takes up to 1,024 arrows per maxed stack, so buyers pay for the labor they didn't do.
  • Advanced arrows (Mithril Champion, Steel Guardian, the Blessed lines) are endgame consumables — a 200+ fletcher can keep the guild's archers stocked.
  • Bows are a one-time purchase per character — steady, not lucrative. Arrows are the recurring revenue.
7) How Fletching Feeds Other Trades Trade web

Fletching is mostly self-contained at the low end, but the endgame arrows pull in half the tradeskill system:

  • Blacksmithing → Fletching: the Surefall arrow path runs on smith-made subcombines — Steel Arrowheads (trivial 188), Steel Arrowshafts (trivial 42), the Surefall Fletching Kit (trivial 162), and the Steel Working Knife (trivial 42). See the Blacksmithing guide.
  • Divine casters → Fletching: Blessed Champion Arrows need emeralds; Blessed Guardian Arrows need foraged Plains Pebbles that must be enchanted. Your deity's casters are part of the supply chain.
  • Fletching → Tailoring: every archer you supply wants a tailored quiver — Tailored Quiver (22% arrow weight reduction) and the Fleeting Quiver (60%). Feed your archers to both trades.
8) Vendors & Supplies Supplies

Fletching's biggest advantage: almost everything is merchant-bought. Stock a Fletching Kit and you're one vendor run from a skilling session.

  • Arrow points, shafts, fletchings, and nocks — standard tradeskill vendors.
  • Surefall path vendors: Qaelin Hailstorm (Surefall Glade / PoK) sells Small Bricks of Steel and quests the Mark of Karana; Jarse Kedison (Surefall Glade) sells Small Groove Nocks; Betty Brickbaker (Rivervale) sells the mold set; Dren Ironforge (North Qeynos) sells hilt and dagger-blade molds.
  • Kelethin path: emeralds for the Blessed Champion line are store-bought — no foraging required.
  • Karana path warning: Blessed Guardian Arrows need foraged Plains Pebbles that must be enchanted. The wiki puts starting success around 5% — budget thousands of pebbles, or skip to Mithril.
9) Racial Advanced Arrows: Step-by-Step Racial recipes

The two racial arrow lines are the payoff at the end of the 200–300 grind: Mithril Champion Arrows from Kelethin (the Wood Elf line) and Steel Guardian Arrows from Surefall Glade (the Karana line). Both are trivial at 335, both need their racial kit, and both have a Blessed variant that's a hair better for followers of Tunare or Karana. The full chain — kit, subcombines, and vendors — is spelled out below.

A note on era: on live EverQuest these racial advanced-arrow systems date to the post-classic fletching era (earliest documented references are from around 2003), not original classic. EQL includes them as documented on its wiki, so they're fair game for the guild.

Wood Elf Mithril: Mithril Champion Arrows (Kelethin)

DMG 11 · Fire DMG 3 · WT 0.1 · Range 150 · usable by Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, and Shadow Knight, all races. Unlike live EQ, EQL does not require you to be a Wood Elf to make these — you just need to be non-aggro in Kelethin, and there is no deity requirement.

The Feir`Dal Fletching Kit

Blacksmithing trivial 163, made in a Feir`Dal Forge: Water Flask + Small Brick of Mithril (Merchant Niwiny, Kelethin) + Hinge Mold + Container Base Mold + Container Lid Mold. Every Kelethin fletching combine goes in this kit.

Mithril subcombines

SubcombineTrivialInYieldsIngredients
Mithril Arrow Heads 42 (Blacksmithing) Feir`Dal Forge 2 Small Brick of Mithril + Water Flask + File (File returns)
Mithril Bundled Arrow Shafts 42 (Blacksmithing) Feir`Dal Forge 2 Large Brick of Mithril + Water Flask + Arrow Shaft Mold + File (File returns)
Mithril Fletchings 34 (Fletching) Feir`Dal Fletching Kit 2 Small Brick of Mithril + Water Flask + Mithril Working Knife (Knife returns)
Mithril Working Knife 42 (Blacksmithing) Feir`Dal Forge 1 (returns on combine) Water Flask + Hilt Mold + Dagger Blade Mold
File 21 (Blacksmithing) Forge 1 (returns on combine) Water Flask + File Mold + Metal Bits (Metal Bits: Blacksmithing trivial 18, yields 2 — 2x Small Piece of Ore + Water Flask)
Small Groove Nocks Bought Fletching vendors

The final combine, in the Feir`Dal Fletching Kit — Mithril Arrow Heads + Mithril Bundled Arrow Shafts + Mithril Fletchings + Small Groove Nocks — makes Mithril Champion Arrows at trivial 335. The EQL wiki lists a yield of 1 arrow per combine.

Kelethin vendors

  • Merchant Niwiny, Kelethin — Small Bricks of Mithril.
  • Borik Darkanvil, southeast trader building, Plane of Knowledge — Water Flasks, Hilt Mold, Dagger Blade Mold, File Mold, Small Piece of Ore.
  • Perago Crotal, eastern trader building, Plane of Knowledge — Large Brick of Mithril.
  • Jaren Cloudchaser, western trader building, Plane of Knowledge — Arrow Shaft Mold.

The Plane of Knowledge vendors above come from the EQProgression guide (live EQ) — confirm they're in the same spots on EQL before you go shopping.

Blessed variant: Blessed Champion Arrows — Tunare worshippers only (Warrior, Paladin, Ranger); +1 fire damage and slightly longer range. Same chain, but the arrowheads are made with store-bought emeralds worked in as Imbued Emerald Shards.

Karana Steel: Steel Guardian Arrows (Surefall Glade)

DMG 11 · Cold DMG 3 · WT 0.1 · Range 150 · usable by Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue, all races (per the EQL item page — the wiki's fletching overview lists Shadow Knight instead of Rogue, so check in-game). To be self-sufficient here you need Karana as your active deity, 203+ Fletching, and 188 Blacksmithing.

Step one: the Mark of Karana

Everything in the Surefall chain keys off the Mark of Karana, quested from Qaelin Hailstorm in Surefall Glade (also in the Plane of Knowledge at +180, +140). Stand next to him without targeting him and say "I need a mark". The mark is returned on every combine, so one is enough. Qaelin also sells the Small and Large Bricks of Steel.

The Surefall Fletching Kit

Blacksmithing trivial 162, in a forge: Small Brick of Steel + Hinge Mold + Container Base Mold + Container Lid Mold (Betty Brickbaker, Rivervale) + Water Flask (Daleen Leafsway, Rivervale) + Mark of Karana (returns). Every Surefall fletching combine goes in this kit.

Steel subcombines

SubcombineTrivialInYieldsIngredients
Steel Working Knife 42 (Blacksmithing, Karana only) Forge 1 (returns) Water Flask + Hilt Mold + Dagger Blade Mold + Mark of Karana + Small Brick of Steel
Steel Arrowheads 188 (Blacksmithing) Forge 2 Water Flask + Mark of Karana (returns) + Small Brick of Steel + File (returns)
Steel Arrowshafts 42 (Blacksmithing) Forge 2 Water Flask + Mark of Karana (returns) + Large Brick of Steel + Arrow Shaft Mold + File (returns)
Steel Fletch 42 (Blacksmithing) Forge 2 Mark of Karana (returns) + Small Brick of Steel + Steel Working Knife (returns)
File 21 (Blacksmithing) Forge 1 (returns) Water Flask + File Mold + Metal Bits (Blacksmithing trivial 18, yields 2 — 2x Small Piece of Ore + Water Flask)
Small Groove Nocks Bought Jarse Kedison, Surefall Glade

The final combine, in the Surefall Fletching Kit — Steel Arrowheads + Steel Arrowshafts + Steel Fletch + Small Groove Nocks — makes Steel Guardian Arrows at trivial 335. Live EQ yields 10 arrows per combine; the EQL yield is worth confirming in-game.

Surefall vendors

  • Qaelin Hailstorm, Surefall Glade (also PoK, +180, +140) — Small and Large Bricks of Steel, and the Mark of Karana quest.
  • Betty Brickbaker, Rivervale (−229, −204) — Hinge, Container Base, Container Lid, and File molds.
  • Daleen Leafsway, Rivervale (−87, −343) — Water Flasks.
  • Grathin Nilm, ranger cabin, Surefall Glade (117, −86) — Water Flasks.
  • Dren Ironforge, North Qeynos (21, 51) — Hilt Mold, Dagger Blade Mold.
  • Bodbin Gimple, Rivervale (−86, 364) — Small Piece of Ore (for Metal Bits).
  • Jarse Kedison, Surefall Glade (101, 101) — Small Groove Nocks, Arrow Shaft Mold.

Blessed variant: Blessed Guardian Arrows — Karana worshippers only (Warrior, Paladin, Ranger); +1 magic damage and longer range. The catch: they need foraged Plains Pebbles that must be enchanted, starting around 5% success — budget thousands of pebbles, or stick with the unblessed line.
