Trade Guide
Pottery
The two-stage clay trade: jars, bowls, poison vials, and deity idols — and the bakers' supply chain running through it.
Recipes and trivials below follow the EQL wiki's Skill Pottery page as of September 2026. EQL can tune trivials with patches, so verify against the linked references before a big combine session.
1) Pottery Basics Open trade
Pottery is the only trade that makes you succeed at two combines to finish a product. Stage one is the Pottery Wheel: sketch + clay + a water flask + extras, and you get an unfired result. Stage two is the Kiln: the unfired piece plus firing sheets, and you get the finished good.
Rule of thumb: firing sheets go in the kiln, everything else goes on the wheel. The kiln combine trivials out far earlier than the wheel combine does — so while you're skilling up, judge everything by the wheel trivial.
The governing stat
Intelligence or Wisdom, whichever is higher, governs your chance to gain a skill point — same as the other trades. Buff the higher one before a skilling session.
The practical truth
Most of what pottery makes exists to feed baking — pie tins, cake rounds, muffin tins, cookie cutters, mixing bowls. If you know a baker, you're about to become their favorite person.
2) The Wheel, the Kiln, and the Firing Step Must know
Both the pottery wheel and the kiln are stationary combines — plan your supply runs around one of the wheel/kiln locations listed below. And while you're purely skilling up, don't bother firing: unfired results can't be sold unless fired, firing sheets don't stack (inventory nightmare), and the kiln trivial is almost always trivial long before the wheel is. Just discard the unfired pieces and keep hammering the wheel — the one exception is the poison vials, which you'll want to fire and keep (see section 5).
Firing sheets
- Quality Firing Sheet — early jars and linings.
- High Quality Firing Sheet — most mid-range pieces, poison vials, deity idols.
- Firing Sheet (plain) — some bowls.
Don't stockpile firing sheets in advance — buy them when you have unfired pieces ready, since they don't stack and will clog your bags.
3) Getting Started: Skill 1–41 Beginner
Dirt cheap. Clay conversions, water flasks, and jar sketches — all vendor stock:
| Skill range | Item | Trivial | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–21 | Block of Clay (conversion) | 21 | Large Block of Clay + Water Flask |
| 21–36 | Unfired Medium Container | 36 | Medium Jar Sketch + Block of Clay + Water Flask |
| 36–41 | Unfired Large Container | 41 | Large Jar Sketch + Block of Clay + Water Flask |
All of this is wheel work — discard the unfired results as you go. The clay/water mixture conversion is trivial 26; use the Block of Clay conversion for the 0–21 step above.
4) The Leveling Path: 41–250 The climb
The wiki's leveling path to 250. Every row is a wheel combine — discard unfired results and keep climbing:
| Skill range | Item (unfired, wheel) | Trivial | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| 41–102 | Unfired Small Bowl | 102 | Bowl Sketch + Small Block of Clay + Water Flask |
| 102–122 | Unfired Medium Bowl | 122 | Medium Bowl Sketch + Block of Clay + Water Flask |
| 122–148 | Unfired Large Bowl | 148 | Large Bowl Sketch + Large Block of Clay + Water Flask + Glass Shard |
| 122–148 | Unfired Poison Vial (alt route) | 148 | Vial Sketch + Small Block of Clay + Water Flask + Pelt/Skin* |
| 122–168 | Unfired Lined Poison Vial | 168 | Lined Vial Sketch + Small Block of Clay + Water Flask + Pelt/Skin* |
| 122–188 | Unfired Sealed Poison Vial | 188 | Sealed Vial Sketch + Small Block of Clay + Water Flask + Pelt/Skin* |
| 188–250 | Unfired Idol | 255 | Imbued Gem + Large Block of Magic Clay + Vial of Clear Mana + Idol Sketch + Sculpting Tools |
* The vials only accept specific pelts/skins — see the poison vial section below. The idol run is detailed in section 6; its kiln combine (fired idol) is trivial 242–248.
5) Poison Vials: 122–188 and Beyond Keep these
The vial run is the one stretch where you do fire your combines: fired poison vials recoup your costs, feed Poison Making, and feed Tailoring past 131 (the mana-vial set). Fire them with High Quality Firing Sheets.
Only certain pelts/skins work
The vials don't take just any hide. Per the wiki, the only pelts and skins that work are:
- Zombie Skin (stacks — the cheap option)
- Low / Medium Quality Wolf Skin, Mist Wolf Pelt, White Wolf Skin, Black Wolf Skin
- Low / Medium Quality Cat Pelt
- Low / Medium Quality Bear Skin, Thick Grizzly Bear Skin
- Crow's Special Brew (special and stacking)
Everything else will waste the combine. Zombie skins are the budget fuel — farm or buy those first.
6) Deity Idols: The 188–250 Endgame Group project
Idols carry you to 250, but they're a team sport — you need an enchanter, a priest caster, and optionally a rogue before you start. Components:
- Enchanter step: have an enchanter turn your saved poison vials + emeralds into Vials of Clear Mana (Clarify Mana, level 29), and clay into Large Blocks of Magic Clay (Enchant Clay, level 8).
- Imbuer step: pick a deity and have a 29+ cleric, druid, shaman, or wizard who worships that deity imbue a gem for you. Imbued Amber (Cazic-Thule) is the cheapest option per the wiki.
- Unfired step (wheel, trivial 255): Imbued Gem + Large Block of Magic Clay + Vial of Clear Mana + Idol Sketch + Sculpting Tools.
- Firing step (kiln, trivial 242–248): Unfired Idol + High Quality Firing Sheet + Divine Crystalline Glaze.
Divine Crystalline Glaze
The glaze is made in a Glaze Mortar from White Lead + Iron Oxide + Permafrost Crystals + Water Flask. The White Lead comes from a rogue's Poison Making (Lead Sulphide + Limestone in a mortar and pestle) — another reason to keep a rogue friend around.
Related: Blank Rune (trivial 162 wheel / 15 no-fail kiln)
The unfired Blank Rune is tradeable toward the Coldain Prayer Shawl quest chain — potters making shawl runes are doing guild service, not skilling.
7) The Money Pottery Economy
Pottery's money comes from being the bakers' supply house — and, per the wiki's veteran potters, from simply selling fired goods back to vendors once your skill is high:
- Baker tools: Pie Tins (trivial 115 wheel), Cake Rounds (37), Muffin Tins (122), Mixing Bowls (128), cookie cutters (102), Skewers (21), Smokers (82), Ceramic Linings (36). The wiki notes pie tins turned a tidy profit for one potter — under 2 gp to make, over 5 gp back from the merchant.
- Poison vials: fire your skilling vials with High Quality Firing Sheets and sell to rogues and tailors working the mana-vial set.
- Deity idols: fired idols are genuinely good range-slot items (stats and resists by deity) — there's a real player market for them.
- High-skill vendor sales: finished goods sold to merchants scale with skill; potters report profiting off vendor sales alone once skill is high.
8) How Pottery Feeds Other Trades Trade web
Pottery is the supplier trade for the supplier trades:
- Pottery → Baking: the whole baker toolkit — pie tins, cake rounds, muffin tins, mixing bowls, cookie cutters, skewers, smokers. See the guild's Baking guide when it lands.
- Pottery → Tailoring: poison vials become Vials of Clear Mana for the tailoring mana-vial set (135–158 range).
- Pottery → Poison Making: poison vials are the rogue's combine container and delivery vessel.
- Others → Pottery: enchanters (Enchant Clay, Clarify Mana) and priest casters (imbue gems) make the idol run possible; rogues make the White Lead for idol glaze. Glass shards and metal bits are vendor or blacksmithing goods.
9) Vendors & Where to Potter Around Locations
The wiki's wheel-and-kiln locations, condensed. Set up wherever the clay, water, and sketches all meet:
- North Freeport: wheel behind the red building across from the Jade Tiger. Clay from Kyrin Steelbone (Groflah's Forge), sketches from Winoyn (by the bank), water flasks from Bran Greenglade.
- West Freeport: two wheels, one kiln. Glass shards and clay from Gurb Smithson, sketches from Jynsa Smithson (water must come from an adjacent zone).
- Highpass Hold: wheel and kiln together inside the Greyeagle Store. Glass/clay from Winn Greenbane, sketches from Min Greyeagle, water from Maigin Greyeagle.
- Oggok: wheel and kiln inside the first caves. Helgara Dirtcarver and Kerplooe Dirtcarver sell clay, water, and sketches.
- Kelethin: wheel and kiln on platform #20. Sketches from Merchant Nildar, glass/clay from Merchant Legweien, water from Merchant Kwein.
- Rivervale: wheel at −160, −90; kiln a run away at 395, −467. Clay from Bodbin Gimple (near the druid guild), water from Daleen Leafsway, glass shards in Misty Thicket from Topper Drodo.
