Trade Guide

Brewing

The supplier trade: drinks, tempers for smiths, oils and tannins for tailors — and the beer the bakers need for their stat food.

Recipes and trivials below follow the EQL wiki's Skill Brewing page as of September 2026. EQL can tune trivials with patches, so verify against the linked references before a big combine session.

1) Brewing Basics Open trade

Brewing makes alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks — and, more importantly for the guild, a range of components used by other trades: oils, tannins, and tempers. The EQL wiki is blunt about it: brewing "may not be the most profitable tradeskill in its own right," but the other trades lean on it hard.

Where to combine

All brewing combines are made in a Brew Barrel, found in most towns. Qeynos and Freeport are excellent cities to learn in.

The governing stat

Intelligence or Wisdom, whichever is higher, governs your chance to gain a skill point on a combine. Buff the higher one before a skilling session.

The golden rule

The wiki's advice, verbatim: "just DO NOT drink while brewing!" Also, don't spend training points on brewing unless you have some to spare — it's easy enough to skill up naturally.

2) Containers: Bottles, Casks & Shotglasses Must know

Most brewing recipes require a container to hold the finished product — a bottle, shotglass, or cask. The good news:

  • On a failed combine, you keep the container but lose the other ingredients.
  • Casks go with beers and ales (Short Beer, Mead, Honey Mead).
  • Bottles go with wines, spirits, juices, and Heady Kiola.
  • Shotglasses go with the hard stuff (Brandy, Halfling Stouters).

Stock containers in bulk before a skilling session — they're cheap, and you don't want to keep running back to the merchant.

3) Getting Started: Skill 1–51 Beginner

The cheapest start in the game — barley, hops, and malt are all merchant-bought:

Skill rangeItemTrivialIngredientsContainer
1–31 Short Beer 31 Barley + Hops + Malt Cask
31–51 Short Ale 51 Barley + Hops + Water Flask Cask

Short Beer is the workhorse: it feeds the bakers' Beer Braised stat-food line (STR +3 mammoth steaks and friends). If you brew nothing else, keep Short Beer flowing to the guild's bakers.

4) The Leveling Path: Fast Track to 248 The climb

The EQL wiki's fast track is built for minimum foraging and minimum running around. Follow it in order:

Skill rangeItemTrivialIngredientsContainer
1–31 Short Beer 31 Barley + Hops + Malt Cask
1–151 Skull Ale 151* Cyclops Skull + Short Beer + Spices + Vinegar Bottle
–168 Ginesh 168* Foraged vegetables —
–188 Faydwer Shaker 188* See EQL wiki —
–248 Minotaur Hero's Brew 248* See EQL wiki —

* Fast-track ranges as listed on the EQL wiki — verify trivials there before a big combine session, per the note at the top of this page.

Notes on the fast track

  • Skull Ale: needs one Cyclops Skull from an undead cyclops in South Karana — and you only need one skull, ever, since it's reused. At first the recipe won't appear in the advanced combine window; manually combine until your first success, then it unlocks for auto-combine.
  • Spices and vinegar aren't sold in every city — plan a shopping trip.
  • Ginesh takes foraged vegetables and is cheap; if you run out of vegetables, just move on to the next recipe.
  • Low-level alternative: if you're brewing before you can farm a skull (level 15–20), the wiki's fallback ladder is Short Ale (51) → Ale (68) → Ol'Tujim's Fierce Brew (135). It works, but it's more annoying and more expensive — waiting for the skull is the play.
5) Tempers, Oils & Tannins: The Supplier Recipes Supplier

This is why the guild wants a brewer: these components feed blacksmithing and tailoring directly. Most are cheap — water flask plus a farmed or foraged drop:

Frost Temper135Brandy + 2× Essence of Winter + Ice Goblin BloodBarbarian Smithing
Heady Kiola462× Packet of Kiola Sap + Water FlaskTailoring component

Heady Kiola is a staple tailoring component — brewers supply it to tailors working silk and leather armor lines. The wiki's tip for tailors: brew Heady Kiola only once it's trivial to you; level on cheap ales instead.

6) Quests That Need Brewing Quests

The EQL wiki flags these quests as requiring brewing skill — the guild's brewers should know them by heart:

  • 🔒 Coming in Velious — not yet available in EQL
Coldain Ring Quests — brewing trivial 248. The top of the fast track exists for this.
  • 🔒 Coming in Velious — not yet available in EQL
Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl — brewing trivial 168.
  • Rogue Redemption — needs brewing; check the quest page for the current requirement.

🔒 Coming in Velious — not yet available in EQL
The Coldain ring and shawl quests are the classic Velious grinds — when that expansion lands, get your brewing up before you start the quest line.

7) The Money Brewing Economy

Honest take from the EQL wiki: brewing is "not the most profitable tradeskill in its own right." The platinum comes from being the supplier, not the star:

  • Tempers for cultural smiths — Blood, Earthen, Frost, and Moonlight Tempers (trivial 135) are required inputs for cultural armor. Smiths pay for reliable supply.
  • Oils for tailors — Fish Oil and Snake Egg Oil (both trivial 68) feed tailoring combines.
  • Heady Kiola — tailors buy it steadily for armor subcombines. Boring, profitable.
  • Short Beer — the bakers' stat-food ingredient. Sell it by the crate.
  • Stat drinks — Flask of Sylvan Berry Juice (AGI +1), Flask of Karana Brown Tea (poison resist +1), Flask of Orange Juice (disease resist +1). Niche, but foraged berries cost you nothing.
8) How Brewing Feeds Other Trades Trade web

Brewing is the tradeskill hub's utility infielder — it touches everyone:

  • Brewing → Baking: Short Beer feeds the Beer Braised stat-food line. See the Baking guide.
  • Brewing → Blacksmithing: Blood, Earthen, Frost, and Moonlight Tempers (all trivial 135) are cultural smithing inputs. See the Blacksmithing guide.
  • Brewing → Tailoring: Heady Kiola (trivial 46) for armor subcombines, plus Fish Oil and Snake Egg Oil for tailoring. See the Tailoring guide.
  • Fishing → Brewing: Fish Eggs (from Thunder or Greengill Salmon) become Fish Oil. See the Fishing guide.
  • Foraging → Brewing: berries, fruit, tea leaves, and vegetables for juices, wines, and Ginesh.
